The Enoch Pratt Free Library is one of the oldest free public libraries in the U.S. The system’s Central Library, established in the late 1880s, occupies a historic building in downtown Baltimore. The 300,000-square-foot building remained opened during its modernization, which included the installation of new HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, security, data, and communications systems. A 43,000-square-foot, four-level addition connected the Central Library with the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. The new structure accommodates the most technologically advanced and sensitive program areas, including Rare Books, Special Collections, the Mencken Collection, and the Preservation and Conservation laboratories.
