Keeping Cool by the Great Flag Window
One of Baltimore’s most popular attractions, the Star-Spangled Banner Museum is located next to the historic Flag House, where the original Star-Spangled Banner was sewn during the War of 1812. The building includes a theater, exhibits, event space, offices, and a Children’s Gallery. The most challenging design aspect addressed the building’s dramatic 30- by 42-foot “Great Flag Window,” which features bands of colored glass depicting a full-size image of the Star-Spangled Banner. Creative strategies for the mechanical systems minimize the heat load from the south-facing window and ensure consistent comfort for visitors.
