Mueller Associates performed an extensive study of the historic Winterthur estate, built in the 1830s, in order to engineer a two-phased approach to the major upgrades required for the museum’s aging HVAC systems, environmental control systems, and boiler plant. During the first phase of construction, the existing equipment was replaced within the museum and office wing—a challenging process involving access to units that were often concealed behind period rooms with priceless finishes and detailing. Temperature and humidity control during this transition period was imperative. The first phase also involved the expansion of the 400-ton chiller plant by an additional 250 tons as well as many additional upgrades. The second phase included a boiler plant upgrade and the addition of a deaerator.
