A Major New Building Supporting Innovative Partnerships and Research

George Mason University’s Institute for Digital InnoAtion (IDIA) Headquarters is a new $250-million, 426,000-square-foot building located at the university’s Arlington campus. The IDIA HQ will support both graduate-level education and cutting-edge research in computing, artificial intelligence, data analytics, cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems, and other aspects of computer science and engineering. Aiming to exceed LEED® Platinum certification requirements, engineering systems will heavily focus on renewable energy strategies.

Approximately 84,400 square feet will be dedicated to research space, the most significant component of the IDIA program. Four types of dry labs will support specialty research activities, including visualization and media, robotics, human subject research, and highly securable labs. Additional resource spaces will entail a multi-purpose room to accommodate conferences, events, lectures, exhibits, and performances; informal public-gathering spaces; and other areas for study, conversations, and impromptu meetings.

Mueller is delivering electrical engineering and plumbing design under a contract with the Mason Innovation Partners public-private partnership (P3) team, which includes Edgemoor as developer and investor, Clark Construction as general contractor, EYP Architecture & Engineering as lead design architect, and OTJ Architects as interior designer. This is the largest higher education facility project in our history.
