Constructed in multiple phases beginning in the 1940s, the Gray Building is a 220,000-square-foot classroom and laboratory facility that serves the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. Because the building’s aging HVAC systems did not meet current codes and standards, Mueller was tasked a multi-phased replacement in order to incorporate new mechanical and electrical systems for the entire structure. The project required extensive field investigation work and the addition of temporary HVAC systems to maintain temperature and humidity requirements in critical research spaces, as the building remained open throughout construction.
