A landmark, circa-1917 building on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus, Wolf Hall presented a number of design challenges in order to renovate the 106,000-square-foot structure and add a four-story, 12,000-square-foot laboratory wing. Mueller was tasked with engineering all new MEP systems, allowing for a phased approach that would enable the building to remain in use. The modernization included the addition of ducted air systems to replace fan coil systems, requiring detailed coordination to integrate the ductwork within the existing structure. The Mueller team devised a number of strategies to maintain the building’s historic integrity, including using existing chimneys to conceal lab exhaust stacks.
